Can Obama Thank McCain or Congratulate Palin?

When Obama was nominated, McCain paid for a tv ad congratulating him for being nominated and for making history. When McCain picked Janet Palin, Hilary Clinton congratulated her, while saying she didn't agree with her politics. Can Obama manage a simple thank you or acknowledge the selection of a woman as vice president? Or are the only emotions Obama can manage are glee at his fame and rudeness to others?
