Why are some people so infatuated with guns?

Don't get me wrong. I know that the Second Amendment gives us the right to bear arms, and I don't think that right should be taken away. However, I still can't help but wonder why some people are so in love with their guns. I've never had one myself, because I've never felt the need to use one. Do most people who are enamored with guns have them, because they wish to use them to kill animals, or is it because they feel that other people pose a constant threat to them?
