I truely think your right about our attention being diverted. If say, a country in Europe or Asia, started aquiring nukes, we'd be too busy in the Middle East jockeying over power and oil to notice. America cannot be the World Police, it's impossible. What we need to do is worry about not making enemies and protect our own. America better watch the quiet one in the back that keeps his mouth shut while secretly is getting ready to hit us with a "Haymaker".
