Valium or Light Sedation for Spinal Cortisone Injection?

Have a ruptured disk between L4/L5 for 8 months. Am receiving my first ESI tomorrow and have a congestion type cold. Question is has anyone ever used one or the other (only valium or the light sedation)? Did anyone feel extreme pain through these types of sedation? Will they sedate me if I am congested? What is the pain of an ESI like? Thanks for your help. I am completely needle phobic and have put this injection off for way too long. But, I personally can't take the pain anymore or the crooked spine.
